Chatham House keeps the Hawkes juggernaut rolling

Lightly-raced mare Chatham House emerged from a bumping duel to land a strong betting move in the 24 Days to Slipper Sprint (1100m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Hawkes Racing team have been on an outstanding run of late and Chatham House was their 66th winner nationally for the season.

The Racenet trainers stats show Team Hawkes saddle up a winner from every 4.7 starters, a stat few training operations can match.

At the top of the straight, it looked as though Chatham House may have had her work cut out finding a gap until Tommy Berry navigated through a passage to explode away from the field after surviving a bumping duel with Kerrin McEvoy aboard Genteel.

Michael Hawkes said the daughter of Fastnet Rock has taken time to mature but is set to have her best preparation yet.

"Nice filly, lightly raced, got into a bit of trouble there but she was just way too good for them," Hawkes said.

"Just taken a lot of time, obviously being by Fastnet (Rock), she wasn't a dead-set two-year-old so we've just been patient but a lot of upside as you saw today.

"She got into a bit of a dodgem car scram there but she's done a good job."

Grand Daughter, the stablemate of Chatham House, was a 2-1/4 length runner-up with the John McNair-trained Mighty Obvious finishing a further three lengths away in third.
