The patience of connections was rewarded when Gods In Him strode to victory in Sunday’s Mitchell Shire Maiden at Seymour.
The five-year-old son of Gods Own was racing for just the third time but showed why Hawkes Racing has persevered with him by proving too good for his rivals over 1200 metres.
Having raced outside the leader to the home turn, Gods In Him ($2.90 fav.) gradually asserted his authority over the final 200 metres to defeat The Flying Doormat comfortably by two lengths at the end of the 1200 metres.
Gods In Him had been placed at his only two previous starts, the last when finishing third at Caulfield on December 13 last year and jockey Dwayne Dunn said he still had room for improvement.
"He’s had his problems but he’s got nice ability and it was good to get the win with him today,” Dunn said.
"He’s still learning his craft and he did it nicely at the finish,
"He wasn’t quite sure how to put them away but he’ll come on a lot for that.”
