An unraced member of the Hawkes Racing team has produced one of the most emphatic two-year-old wins of the season in Sydney at Canterbury on Friday night.
Straight Gold, by last year's Golden Slipper winning sire Stratum, toyed with his rivals for a 4-3/4 length win in a canter in the Lynch Flowers Handicap (1100m).
“It was a lovely debut,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes told TVN. “He has a lot to learn but he is a lovely colt.
“He is raw and when he matures and keeps improving he will be a nice horse.”
Corey Brown, who had an absolute armchair ride, was also glowing in his praise when interviewed on TVN.
“He was really impressive, he jumped well and travelled beautifully,” he said.
“I think they’ve got their hands on a pretty good one.”
Straight Gold defeated Besa Bola from the Grahame Begg stable with Alkie finishing in third.
