Hawkes team make rare foray to a country track

The Hawkes Racing-trained Mulu Miss will be striving for her first win at Bathurst on Monday.

Mulu Miss is a three-year-old daughter of Flying Spur out of the Red Ransom mare Bold Demand and cost $400,000 at the 2009 Inglis Easter Yearling sale.

The filly has yet to run a place in five starts but does look well placed in the Luke Bennett Plumbing Maiden Handicap (1200m).

Mulu Miss finished down the track at her first two starts on metropolitan tracks but has been more competitive at her past three runs on the provincial circuit.

“You have to take horses where they can win a race these days and place them in the right races,” Michael Hawkes said.

“This is our first runner at Bathurst as a partnership although I think Dad (John Hawkes) has had a few runners there in the past.

“Mulu Miss has always shown something and will be hard to beat on Monday.

“She copped a couple of checks at Gosford last start and her run was good.

“She will run well.”
