Proven Group I performer Love Conquers All will line up in Saturday’s star-studded Group II Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill after performing to expectations in a trial on Tuesday.
The Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes-trained galloper finished unplaced behind the noted speedster Winter King in the 900 metre heat on the Rosehill 'A grass'.
"The track is very heavy but he went good, did what we wanted," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.
"He got back, did what he had to do and hit the line strong.
"He’s a bit older now, a bit wiser I suppose but he’ll run on Saturday."
Hawkes said Love Conquers All is "the best I’ve ever seen him look" leading into a preparation but being a five-year-old stallion the horse is carrying more condition than he has in the past.
"He’s a bull, bigger and stronger," he said. "He’ll be competitive on Saturday but whatever he does he’ll improve from it.
"He’s not as light as I’ve seen him in the past, he’s heavier, so therefore it may just take him a run or two to get back into the swing of things but the horse is a trier and that should never be underestimated."
Meanwhile, the Hawkes Racing team will also run the former Hong Kong Group I winner Happy Zero against the stablemate on Saturday.
Michael Hawkes said the seven-year-old gelding has adjusted to life back in Australia, suggesting a solid showing could be on the cards from the son of Danzero this weekend.
"He’s a lot more relaxed this time. He’s settled in a lot better," he said. "He’s working good, he looks great and his attitude is good for an older horse."
