Maluckyday pleases stable with solid trial hit out

Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday turned in a satisfying effort in a Rosehill trial on Tuesday.

The highly promising stayer did everything his co-trainer Michael Hawkes wanted to see when finishing fourth in a top quality 900 metre heat that included Doncaster Mile winner Rangirangdoo and Villiers winner Dances On Waves.

“He trialled really good,” Hawkes said. “He jumped out, travelled well and hit the line really strong.

“We wasn’t overexerted, but he’s come back well.

“He went really good and is going improve off that.”

Another exciting prospect from the Hawkes Racing team is Black Caviar’s undefeated full brother Moshe, who stepped out in Sydney for the first time in public and he won his 900 metre trial in emphatic fashion.

“He’d never been to Sydney before this prep but he’s kept improving and he did everything right today,” Michael Hawkes said. “He won his trial by four or five lengths, but it wasn’t about how far he won the trial, it was more about how he did it and I can’t fault him.

“He went really good.”

Hawkes also said stable stalwart Mentality and another promising galloper in the team, Stratford, both turned in satisfying performances in their respective trials.

Team Hawkes is keeping their cards close to their chest on the subject of when and where Maluckyday and Moshe will resume, with Michael Hawkes suggesting a decision will be made in the coming days after seeing how the horses come through their trials.
