Star colt All Too Hard and Golden Slipper runner-up Snitzerland appear set for a serious spring campaigns after producing eye-catching performances at the Rosehill barrier trials on Friday.
All Too Hard, the half-brother to Australian racing’s best galloper Black Caviar, finished a half neck behind Snitzerland in their first public hit-out as three-year-olds. The Gerald Ryan-trained filly stopped the clock in a slick 53.51 seconds for the 900 metres.
The new addition to Ryan’s stable, Villa Splendido was a long neck away in third.
Snitzerland’s stablemate Cavalry Rose took up the early running in the heat with the former stalking the speed. All To Hard was given plenty of time to find his feet in the early stages of the trial, settling last in the six horse field.
Approaching the home turn All To Hard was still last, around eight lengths of the leader before being eased out three wide. Snitzerland went to the front without any pressure while All To Hard was starting to close "under his own steam”.
Both horses went to the line untested.
All Too Hard’s co-trainer Michael Hawkes struggled to hide his delight with the manner in which his three-year-old colt trialled.
"We couldn’t have asked for anything more. It was a fair trial,” Hawkes said.
"They ran time, he looked to be doing it within himself so we’re looking forward to the preparation.
"The early signs are he’s pulled up well. So far so good.”
Hawkes said in the coming days his father, and co-trainer, John will discuss the horse’s immediate racing plans with All Too Hard’s owner Nathan Tinkler.
Snitzerland is expected to resume in the Group III San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 18. The filly’s long-term goal is the Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 3.
